It's been an eventful couple of months at MFCG since I've taken over the website from the lovely Trish. This is my first blog and it will be quite condensed - we've been so busy so I've got quite a bit of news to share! We're hoping that this blog might develop over time to include sustainability/environment/community news and articles of interest - even by guest bloggers (preferably MFCG members) so please email us or leave a comment with your suggestions!

Grandparent's day
Yesterday was grandparent's day and we held a wonderful event at the garden for grandparents and grandchildren to learn all about bugs! Thanks very much to our events committee members Margaret, Lisa and Amina for organising and thanks to the Department for Communities for funding this event! We had more than 50 people attend despite soaring temperatures! Activities included presentations from Damian (who told us all about insects) and Sonny (who told us about keeping bees and making honey), craft activities for the kids including making little eggshell "cress-heads", and a bug-hunt! Fun was had by all and everyone enjoyed the yummy lunch too!

Busy bee
Our last busy bee was held on the 14th of October and was a great success! Thanks to all who attended for your hard work. At the end of the day, the MFCG had a new greenhouse/seed raising area, compost bays and a blackboard sign to share news at the garden! The garden is, step by step, taking shape! If you are keen to be involved in some heavy work and see some big results, make sure you don't miss our next busy bee - grass dig day, next Saturday (3rd November) at the garden from 9 am! See our events page for more.

Stay on your feet week event
Margaret is our guest blogger for this event and her report is below for your enjoyment! I've copied recipes from the recipe book over on our brand new recipes page - enjoy!
STAY ON YOUR FEET WEEK EVENT – HEALTHY OUTSIDE, HEALTHY INSIDE
Held at the garden 13th September 2012
Funded by the Injury Control Council of WA (ICCWA)
This event was attended by 25 seniors plus 3 presenters and one assistant.
The event went well as attested by ICCWA staff, Juliana and Emily who enjoyed the event as being something different from the mainstream of events funded for the purpose.
Margaret demonstrated briefly how to grow silverbeet (chard) and spinach in a pot and there were 5 good examples of healthy growth in pots to give away as prizes in competitions.
Participants were then asked to complete the questionnaire about falls to focus them on the next presenter’s talk. David McMullen, a local physiotherapist donated his time to the event and talked about the stats related to falls – he then had everyone take their resting pulse before getting the participants to move outside and do some exercise.
This was followed by Louise Campbell a third year nutrition student from Curtin University who used the event as part of her course work. She presented brilliantly on the nutritious value of green leafy veg and the benefits of eating same, particularly that which is fresh and perhaps home grown.
This was followed by tasting plates of vegetables – a green lentil and silverbeet with ginger recipe together with some basmati rice and a baby spinach salad with spiced dressing containing tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, coriander and mint.
All agreed the food was good. Many of the participants had not previously eaten lentils but did so with gusto. All the participants were given the show bag provided which also included a recipe book of several recipes for green leafy veg including the dishes they had tasted.
